How much time is needed for my Remodeling Project?

First comes a dream for a massive project such as a Whole Home Remodel or you dream for a more centralized project like a Kitchen Remodel or Bathroom Remodel.   While we would love to just be able to get to work the day after you are ready to sign on the dotted line, that is not a reality. More importantly, it is impossible to randomly commit to a pinpoint completion date without taking many things into consideration. People think the hardest question pertains to money, when it fact the harder question has to do with time.

When you actually sign and provide the deposit

You need to understand that remodelers are a business that is first focused on what is actually happening, and then aware of what may happen. Our remodeling company can have just a couple, or perhaps many proposals that are in different client hands for consideration. Like any other business, we need to react to facts and those schedules can change at anytime a new deposit arrives. We try our best to give an estimated delivery, but that is always based on getting a deposit in a reasonable amount of time. Our goal is never to alienate someone, but the fact is that it is very easy to alter our schedule from one month to many months out by simply receiving a deposit from another client.

Unanticipated supply chain issues

By now everyone has heard of some form of supply chain issue over the years, and they still exist today. Your materials, especially custom selections, can randomly be delayed. These delivery topics need to be appreciated that they are simply beyond our control. Cabinets, Countertops, specialty flooring and numerous other smaller items can be caught up in transport either domestically or internationally.  Many warehouses do not keep the same inventory levels they use to due to numerous economic uncertainties. It is an easy to appreciate suppliers trying to be careful spending more money than they need to in order to store materials they may not sell.

Latitude for the unexpected

While we wish for it to be a perfect world, things do go wrong in construction. Perhaps there is a challenge behind a wall that was unknown before the remodeler opens it up. Maybe a particular material had a defect or was mislabeled forcing replacement parts. Or perhaps an employee or subcontractor has a personal issue or sickness that prevents them from being on the jobsite as scheduled. Of course we do not want any of these unexpected items to occur, but we need to be reasonable in our understanding that it does happen. We want to remodel your home the right way, even if that is at the expense of lost time when unique situations arise.

From a month to over six months

A simple guest bathroom is easy to appreciate the time taking about a month to demo the room, and then redo the entire room. A kitchen can take two to three months while renovating an entire home can even take well over six months. Here is a quick example of one event taking time, regardless of the room you are in. You may desire a custom countertop, and that countertop can not be fabricated until the cabinets are installed. Once installed, a professional will come to measure they exact dimensions so the countertop can be cut to fit. Another example is scheduling the painting to occur after everything else has been completed. Like all other steps, the painting will not be scheduled until all other steps are completed. We began the section “From a month” and in reality it should say “From over a month”, but wanted to provide examples of the steps we need to take that validate realistic any minimum time frames.

Commit to the plan sooner than later

The most successful remodeling projects have detailed planning and design completed well before any construction begins. Having Design Plans is the absolute best way to avoid surprises during construction. While some surprises still may occur, they will be vastly reduced and centralized. Many will go about a remodeling project without a design in place, and then it gets challenging when additional costs appear.  Taking the time to measure and select the materials will allow everyone to understand and agree to exactly what to remodel and how everyone will achieve it. If your serious about your remodeling project, at least commit to the planning and design sooner. You can always make adjustments, or perhaps the price of some materials may change based on delays in your actual start date. But at least the plan will be in hand, saving a lot of valuable time once the actual construction begins.

Good communications when scheduling issues occur

Managing everyone’s expectations is highly advantageous for both the remodeler and the homeowner.  Deciding on everything from the layout to the material details minimizes misunderstandings and maximizes the objective.  All of this of course influences the amount you are going to spend, but it also allows us to confront time challenges if and when they occur.  Simply not being agitated when things do not happen exactly on time is an important step in enjoying the remodeling process.

Commit to the design to reduce stress

Do not minimize this important step in your remodeling project. You need to appreciate the Design Process and individual steps for a Successful Design. You will spend money on this separate from the actual remodeling, so ensure to do it right just like the design we shared here to create this Whole Home Remodel! While of course you see a beautiful project, it is also important to know the clients were well aware of what was happening – and when it was happening!
